From the inspiration of community theater for Sylva in the early 1980's by a few local residents to a theater group called the Kudzu Players (name chosen by vines growing through the roof of its first location, the Old Sylva School) this theater group provided a source of unique quality entertainment for community and neighboring cities until 2008.  Stephens served on the first board of the Kudzu Players in 1982.  Productions include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor, Dreamcoat, Greater Tuna, Steel Magnolias, On Borrowed Time, and Arsenic and Old Lace.

Charlie was gifted in working with casts of all ages through the local Kudzu Players.  He was a master at crafting young actors and encouraging them to excel in their on-stage roles by founding the Chatterbox Children's Theater, a division of the Kudzu Players.  His directing portfolio with The Chatterbox Players includes Dandelion, Cinderella, Wind in the Willows, and Charlotte's Web.  He delighted in seeing others inspired by the love of theater.  He would be honored to see his name and his legacy attached to this scholarship.
